Suffering From Bad Breath That Won’t Go Away?

Most of us deal with occasional bad breath. At times it’s because of the food we eat, the coffee we drink, or simply waking up in the morning with a dry mouth. These are fairly harmless reasons your breath might not be at its best.

But persistent bad breath, also called halitosis, can sometimes signal an issue with your teeth or gums that needs professional attention.

What Causes Bad Breath?

Most bad breath starts in the mouth. Bacteria naturally live on the teeth, gums, and tongue, and they produce odors as they break down food particles and other material.

Some common causes of bad breath include:

  • Food trapped between the teeth
  • Plaque and tartar buildup
  • Gum disease
  • Tooth decay
  • Dry mouth
  • Smoking or vaping
  • Strong foods such as garlic and onions
  • Certain medications
  • Inconsistent brushing and flossing

Dry mouth can be a major factor. Saliva helps clean the mouth throughout the day. Without enough saliva, bacteria and food debris linger longer and contribute to bad breath.

When Bad Breath Could Signal an Infection

Bad breath alone is usually not a dental emergency. However, a sudden foul odor or taste in the mouth may be the result of an infected or abscessed tooth. A dental abscess is a pocket of infection that develops around a tooth or in the gums. In addition to bad breath or a foul taste that accompanies an abscessed tooth, you may also experience:

  • A severe or throbbing toothache
  • Pain when biting or chewing
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Swelling in the face or cheek
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Fever
  • A pimple-like bump on the gums
  • Foul-tasting fluid that suddenly drains into your mouth

An abscess will not go away on its own. Even if it drains and the pain suddenly improves, you still need to treat the underlying infection. Letting the infection continue often leads to more complicated dental and health issues as it spreads throughout the body.

Make an appointment with your dentist, and if oral swelling affects your ability to breathe or swallow, seek emergency medical care rather than waiting for a dental appointment.

Could Your Gums Be Causing Bad Breath?

Persistent bad breath can also be connected to gum disease. Plaque that remains around and below the gumline irritates the gums and creates the perfect environment for odor-producing bacteria to thrive.

Other possible signs of gum disease include gums that bleed when brushing or flossing, redness, swelling, tenderness, gum recession, or loose teeth.

Mints and mouthwash temporarily disguise bad breath, but they won’t correct the underlying dental problem. Treating the gum disease is key to fresher breath.

Simple Ways to Keep Your Breath Fresher

If there isn’t a specific dental problem causing your bad breath, then a few everyday habits make a noticeable difference:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day
  • Floss every day to clean between the teeth
  • Gently clean your tongue
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Clean dentures, retainers, or other removable appliances regularly
  • Avoid tobacco products
  • Keep up with regular dental exams and professional cleanings

If you suffer from dry mouth, drinking water regularly and chewing sugar-free gum helps stimulate saliva, which washes away food debris and bacteria that cause bad breath. However, persistent dry mouth should be discussed with your dentist because it also increases the risk of tooth decay and oral infections.

When Fresh Breath Requires More Than a Mint

If you still have bad breath despite good brushing, flossing, and hydration, don’t keep covering it up with gum or mouthwash. Schedule a dental exam to identify the source of your problem, whether it is plaque buildup, gum disease, tooth decay, dry mouth, or something else.

And if bad breath or a foul taste is combined with tooth pain, swelling, or other signs of infection, contact Paramount Dental immediately. Our emergency team can identify the source of the problem and provide the treatment needed to get your mouth and your breath feeling healthy again.
