Loose or Broken Dental Crowns

If your dental crown has come loose or fallen off, it can cause some concern. But there’s no need to panic. Paramount Dental offers immediate steps you should take until we can safely reattach or replace your crown.

What to Do If Your Crown Falls Out

  • Save the crown: If it’s intact, a crown that has fallen out may be simply reattached. If it’s broken, however, a replacement will be needed, but be sure to bring all the pieces of the crown with you.
  • Clean the crown: Gently rinse the crown and your mouth.
  • Safely store it: Place the intact or broken crown pieces in a clean container, such as a small plastic bag, box, or medicine bottle.
  • Call us right away: Contact Paramount Dental at (916) 898-0003, and we will get you into the office promptly for repair or replacement of the crown.

Professional Care You Can Rely On

A crown that falls out can often be fixed, but it’s important to avoid temporary “quick fixes” like super glue. These adhesives are unsafe for oral tissues and may cause further damage. Instead, rely on our dental team for safe, effective, and lasting solutions to restore your crown and your smile.

Crown Fell Out FAQs

Is a lost crown a dental emergency?

Usually, a lost or broken crown is not a 911 emergency, but prompt dental care is important to protect the tooth and restore function. Call us to schedule a same-day or next-day appointment if available.

Can I glue my crown back in?

This is not recommended! Super glue or other household adhesives harm teeth and gums and complicate the professional repair or replacement. If necessary, you may use temporary dental cement that can be purchased from a local pharmacy until your dental visit. Whatever you do, DO NOT force the crown into position. It’s better to leave the placement to the professionals!

Can the same crown be reused?

Most often the anser is yes. If the crown and tooth are healthy and the fit is still accurate, we clean the surfaces and recement it. If, however, there is decay, fracture, or poor fit, we may recommend repair or replacement.

What should I do with the crown?

Rinse it gently, place it in a clean container, and bring all pieces with you. Avoid scrubbing or using alcohol/household cleaners, as this further damages the crown.

What can I eat before it’s fixed?

Choose soft foods and avoid sticky or hard items that will cause additional damage. Chew on the opposite side of the broken crown to prevent damage to the exposed tooth.

Why do crowns come loose?

Crowns can loosen over time due to worn or compromised cement. New decay at the margin line, bite changes, clenching/grinding, or trauma can also be a factor. Whatever the cause, we’ll identify the root issue and help prevent a repeat.
