Dental Abscess – Don’t Ignore the Pain

If you are experiencing sharp, throbbing, or persistent oral pain, bad breath, and a fever? Then you are most likely dealing with a dental abscess. Abscesses are caused by a bacterial infection near the root of a tooth that leads to the buildup of pus. These infections, if left untreated, worsen over time and eventually cause serious bone damage. Paramount Dental is here to ensure you receive the treatment necessary to eliminate the infection and alleviate the pain.

Signs of a Dental Abscess

  • Redness around the affected area
  • A visible bump or “pimple” on the gums
  • Intense, throbbing, or radiating pain that may include the jaw, neck, or ear
  • Swelling of the face or cheek
  • Pain that intensifies when lying down

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, prompt treatment is essential. At Paramount Dental, we’re here to provide the treatment necessary to bring you relief.

Temporary Relief Until Your Visit

We recommend the following simple steps until your emergency dental appointment with us:

  • Warm saltwater rinse: This cleanses the infected area and helps reduce the pain.
  • Cold compress: Apply to the outside of your cheek near the infection to ease swelling.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers: Ibuprofen or acetaminophen, when taken per instructions, help control pain.
  • Call us immediately: Contact Paramount Dental at (916) 898-0003 for urgent care.

Why You Need Professional Care

Unfortunately, at-home remedies only provide short-term relief. A dental abscess requires professional diagnosis and treatment to prevent the infection from spreading and causing serious, even life-threatening complications. Don’t wait—reach out today for expert care.

Dental Abscess FAQs

Is a dental abscess an emergency?

Yes it is. An abscess is an active infection that requires prompt dental treatment to relieve pain and prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of the mouth and body. Go to urgent medical care first if you have fever, facial swelling, or trouble breathing or swallowing.

Will antibiotics alone cure a tooth abscess?

No. Antibiotics will help, but only dental treatment, such as drainage of the pus pocket and root canal therapy or tooth extraction, will help you have a full recovery.

Can I pop the abscess at home?

This is NOT recommended. Popping or squeezing the abscess can worsen the infection and delay proper care. Only a professional dentist should drain and treat an abscess.

What are the treatment options?

The cause of the abscess determines the recommended treatment. Options include incision and drainage, root canal therapy, or tooth extraction. Periodontal abscesses require additional gum treatment to restore oral health.

How do I manage pain until my visit?

Use dentist-approved OTC pain relievers as directed and rinse with warm saltwater. Eat only soft foods and avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks.

Will my insurance cover treatment?

Many dental insurance plans cover emergency exams and diagnostic imaging; coverage for root canals, crowns, or extractions varies by plan. We will be sure to provide you with an estimate before treatment.
