Dental anxiety is more common than many people realize. For some, it is a mild sense of nervousness. For others, the fear is strong enough to delay care until pain, swelling, or another urgent problem makes a dental visit unavoidable.
If that sounds familiar, you are not the only one. At Paramount Dental, we understand that emergency dental visits can feel especially stressful. Our goal is to treat the problem while also helping you feel informed, respected, and as comfortable as possible throughout your visit.
Why Are So Many People Afraid of the Dentist?
Dental fear can come from many places. Some common reasons for dental anxiety include:
- A bad experience with a dentist in the past
- Fear of shots or needles
- Worry about feeling pain
- Feeling like they have no control during treatment
- Embarrassment about the condition of their teeth
- Not knowing what a procedure will involve
- Sensitivity to sounds, smells, or other sensations
The challenge is that minor dental problems usually don’t improve if you ignore them. A small cavity can turn into a serious toothache. A minor crack in a tooth can get worse. An oral infection can spread. The longer you wait to seek professional treatment, the harder the problem becomes to ignore.
Comfortable Care Starts with Communication
You don’t need to hide your anxiety in the dental chair. As dental professionals, we understand that people feel differently about dental care, and we know that dental anxiety in patients of all ages is very real. Instead of hiding your feelings, be upfront with us when you call or when you arrive for your appointment. If we know you’re nervous, we will ensure your comfort and reduce your anxiety by slowing things down, explaining more as we go, and giving you a better idea of what to expect.
If you need a break during treatment, say so. Some patients like to agree on a hand signal before we start. Raise your hand, we stop, and you get a moment. It sounds simple, but knowing you can pause the appointment makes a big difference.
Don’t Be Embarrassed About Your Teeth
This is a big one. Some patients fear being judged on the condition of their teeth more than the treatment itself. Maybe they haven’t been to the dentist in years, or they’ve had a broken tooth for months. Perhaps they already know several things need attention. None of that should stop you from coming in. What matters is that you’re doing something about it NOW.
Rest assured, our team is not here to give you a hard time about what you should have done six months or six years ago. We want to understand what’s hurting, what needs attention, and how we can help.
Emergency Dental Care Without the Rush
When you’re in pain, you need relief as quickly as possible; however, that doesn’t mean we skip the conversation and jump straight into treatment. The dentist will first do a gentle oral exam, using X-rays only if necessary, and then explain what they find.
After your exam, the dentist will recommend treatment and discuss your options. They will explain everything, including how long a procedure or treatment will last, whether the area will need to be numbed, and whether sedation is more appropriate. We encourage our patients to ask questions. If you’re concerned or anxious about something, bring it up. Being informed and understanding the process can take away much of the fear many experience in emergency situations.
Don’t Let Fear Delay Dental Treatment
Whether you are overdue for an exam and cleaning or dealing with a toothache, swelling, a broken tooth, or another dental emergency, putting off treatment makes things harder. If you suffer from dental anxiety or fear, we don’t expect you to suddenly stop being afraid of the dentist before making an appointment. You just have to take the next step.
Call Paramount Dental and tell us what’s going on. And if you’re nervous about coming in, tell us that too. We’ll work with you to address the problem, get you more comfortable, and make the visit as manageable as possible. Our emergency dentist in Roseville is here to help you get the treatment you need with compassionate care!
